AMY TURNED THE OTHER way and closed her eyes. She hoped to get some sleep, but she knew it would be a long night lying next to Sam. She was surprised that he had opened up to her as much as he did, but she was glad he did. Amy tried hard to keep from reaching out to touch Sam, if only to let him know that she appreciated his honesty. “Sam?” Amy whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Goodnight,” she said.

“Goodnight, Amy.”

She woke the next morning and found Sam’s side of the bed empty. She hadn’t heard him get up. Amy quickly climbed out of bed to take a shower before going down to meet the others. She went into the bathroom and was surprised to see Sam standing over the sink, shirtless and shaving. “Oh sorry! I’ll wait till you’re done.” Amy quickly shut the door and smiled to herself, slightly embarrassed.

“Amy, wait,” Sam called to her. “Do you think you could help me with something?”

Amy stood behind the door. She closed her eyes and wrinkled her face. Help with what? “Um, sure.”

“Can you come back in?” Sam asked.

Amy took a deep breath and opened the bathroom door. She forced a smile. “What’s up?”

“I, um, tried to have a sponge bath this morning. But I couldn’t reach my back and it’s been driving me crazy.” He handed her a washcloth. “Would you mind?”

Amy shook her head. Her stomach was in knots. “Of course not.” Amy took the cloth and slowly dipped it into the sink. The water was still warm. Her heart drummed heavily in her chest, that she was afraid he could hear it.

She squeezed the excess water and raised her hand to his back. After their talk last night, Amy felt a tender affection for Sam. It was no wonder he was so cold towards his mom. She couldn’t imagine what it must have been like having to choose between someone you love and a future for your own daughter. The thought of her own past made her stomach turn.

“I didn’t hear you get up this morning,” she said.

“That feels really good,” Sam said. A moan rolled in his throat. “You were sound asleep, and I didn’t want to wake you.”

“Sorry about that. I’m usually an early riser.” Amy gave his back a once over. “There you go... how’s that?”

“Could you rub it in more towards the center? It’s a bit itchy.”

Amy rubbed the cloth in with more pressure. “Like that?” She noticed his broad, muscular shoulders and how the water trickled down his back.

“I think I might need to get a back-scratcher.” Sam groaned. “I can’t wait to get this cast off and have a proper shower.”

Amy’s fingertips accidentally touched his skin. She wondered what it would feel like to run her hands across the wide of his back. She bit her bottom lip and shook her thoughts away.

“By the way, I didn’t take you for a snorer.” He grinned.

“Me?” Amy felt her cheeks get hot and gave him a little push.
